Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois – Hérault – Occitanie
La Grotte des Demoiselles
About 55 min by car, combine with La Bambouseraie
In the upper Hérault valley, at Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois, the Grotte des Demoiselles takes you on a spectacular journey to the heart of the earth. Listed as a national site, this natural cave shaped by water over thousands of years reveals giant formations and astonishing mineral scenery, to discover with family, as a couple or with friends.
The visit starts in an original way: an underground funicular, described as the first in Europe, lifts you 54 metres through the rock to the entrance of the cave. A 1,200-metre path then lets you discover the various chambers with a guide.
Inside the Cathedral of Wonders
The highlight of the visit, the Cathedral of Wonders is a huge chamber adorned with draperies, columns and monumental stalactites. Among the most famous formations is “the Virgin and Child”, a stalagmite with an astonishing silhouette. The exceptional acoustics even host concerts and, for fifty years, a Christmas Mass.
The guided tour lasts about 1 hour 15 minutes and includes about 550 steps. The temperature stays close to 15 °C all year round: bring a jumper, even in midsummer, though blankets are lent on site. The route suits young and old alike; a baby carrier is advised for the youngest.
A stop at La Bambouseraie
Between the Hérault valley and the Cévennes, La Bambouseraie near Anduze is the ideal complement to this outing. This exceptional botanical garden is home to more than 1,300 varieties of bamboo, trees and remarkable plants, in a shady setting that is very pleasant after the coolness of the cave.
It is easy to combine the two visits in one day: the cave in the morning and La Bambouseraie in the afternoon, allowing about 45 minutes' drive between the two. As times vary with the season, remember to plan your route in advance.
Opening hours and prices
In 2026, the cave is open every day from 7 February to 31 December. Several guided tours depart each day, at times that vary with the season; booking online is strongly advised, especially during the holidays. Themed tours (by lantern, thrill tours, storytelling tours for children) are also available by reservation.
The guided tour costs €16 per adult and €12 per child aged 4 to 12. Ages 13 to 17 pay €14, and entry is free for under-4s. A family pass is available at €52 for two adults and two children. On site, a brasserie, an ice cream parlour and a shop let you extend your outing.
