The Cosquer Méditerranée cave
About 1 hr 45 min by car
At the foot of the Mucem, on the J4 esplanade, Cosquer Méditerranée brings back to life one of the most fascinating decorated caves in Europe. The real cave, discovered by the diver Henri Cosquer in the calanques, opens beneath the sea at Cap Morgiou and remains out of reach: its identical replica lets young and old discover it without getting wet.
Allow about two hours to enjoy the whole site. The cave tour itself lasts 35 minutes, with an audio guide available in six languages, including a version for children aged 3 to 8.
A dive into prehistory
The adventure begins with a lift that simulates a diving chamber and takes you down to level -2, below the sea. Seated in a six-person exploration module, you then glide along walls decorated with nearly 480 paintings and engravings: horses and bison, but also seals and penguins, marine animals rarely depicted in prehistoric art.
The ticket also includes the film “L’aventure d’Henri Cosquer”, shown in the amphitheatre, and “Le Passage”, an immersive experience in two rooms lasting about fifteen minutes.
The Mediterranean gallery
On the third floor, the Mediterranean gallery extends the visit over 2,500 m², suspended 15 metres up with glass floors. Children come face to face with life-size animals that lived in the region at the time of the cave: bison, aurochs, giant deer, saiga antelope, seal and great auk.
Guides answer questions throughout the visit, and a bookshop awaits visitors at the exit. Eating is not allowed in the cave or the gallery, but picnic tables are available on the esplanade.
Opening hours and prices
Cosquer Méditerranée is open every day from 9.30 am to 6 pm. The last tour starts an hour and a half before closing time. The site closes or shortens its hours on some days: check the official website before you set off and book your time slot online.
Admission costs €19 per adult, €11 for ages 10 to 17 and €6 for ages 6 to 9. It is free up to age 5, but the cave itself is not open to children under 3. Paper ANCV holiday vouchers (chèques-vacances) are accepted. Pets are not allowed, except assistance dogs.
