Vers-Pont-du-Gard – Gard – Occitanie

The Pont du Gard

About 55 min by car, combine with Uzès

Built in the 1st century AD, the Pont du Gard is the tallest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world: 49 metres high, with three tiers of arches spanning the Gardon. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, it is one of the finest days out from our villa, for young and old alike.

The bridge was only one part of a 50-kilometre aqueduct that carried water from Uzès to Nîmes. Today the site, entirely pedestrianised, can be explored at your own pace, between garrigue scrubland, riverbanks and spaces devoted to Roman engineering.

A Roman masterpiece to explore

Access to the bridge is free: you can walk across it and admire it from both banks. The marked trails around the site, such as the Sentier des vestiges or the “Mémoires de Garrigue” trail, offer lovely views of the monument and its Mediterranean landscape.

On the left bank, the discovery spaces tell the story of the aqueduct: a 2,500 m² museum, a 15-minute film at the Ciné and the Ludo area for children aged 5 to 12. The guided tour takes you up to the top of the bridge to walk through the ancient channel where water flowed 2,000 years ago.

A family day out on the banks of the Gardon

The site lends itself to a proper day of relaxation: a picnic by the water, family walks and, during the school holidays, workshops to discover life in ancient times (mosaics, oil lamps, laurel wreaths…).

In July and August, from sunset, the arches of the aqueduct light up every evening for a sound and light show: a lovely way to round off the day before heading back to the villa.

A stop in Uzès

Close by, Uzès is the perfect way to complete the day: the Place aux Herbes and its arcades, the Duché and the Fenestrelle tower can all be explored on foot, through the stone lanes of the historic centre.

Cycling fans can also take the greenway linking Beaucaire and Uzès: it passes right by the Pont du Gard.

Opening hours and prices

The site and car parks are open every day from 8 am to midnight. The cultural spaces open from 9 am to 6 pm in March and October, from 9 am to 7 pm from April to June and in September, and from 9 am to 8 pm in July and August; they are closed from November to February, as well as every Monday morning.

The bridge is free to visit on foot or by bike; parking costs €9 per car for the day. Entry to the discovery spaces: €8 per adult, free for under-18s. Guided tour: €15 per adult, €6 for ages 4 to 17. Chèques-Vacances (French holiday vouchers) are accepted.
