Mauguio – Hérault – Occitanie
Walk around the Mauguio lagoons
15 min by car, on foot or by bike, easy to moderate
Starting from Mauguio, set off on a pleasant walk along the Étang de l'Or, also known as the Mauguio lagoon. The Sentier du Cabanier follows the lagoon through a landscape typical of the Petite Camargue, with reed beds, canals, wet meadows and old fishermen's huts.
This almost flat route, accessible to all, lets you observe varied wildlife: ducks, herons, coots, Camargue horses and, regularly, flamingos. The lagoon and its surroundings are a protected Natura 2000 natural area, particularly rich but also fragile.
The Sentier du Cabanier is about 5 km there and back and can be done on foot, by bike or on horseback. Allow around two hours to take your time and enjoy the calm, the views over the lagoon and the birdwatching. Some parts of the marshes may however be restricted or closed depending on the season to protect nesting birds: remember to check local information before you set off. In summer, bring caps and water bottles!
