Surrounded by arcades and old façades, the Place aux Herbes is the heart of Uzès, with its café terraces and shops.

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, it comes alive with the markets: producers, craftspeople and traders offer fruit and vegetables, local produce and regional specialities. On Saturdays, the market spills over onto the boulevards.

In 1565, Antoine de Crussol became Duke of Uzès, making the town the first duchy in France.

In the heart of the historic centre, the Duché is the symbol of this prestigious past: its architecture bears the marks of several centuries of history, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

A few minutes from the Place aux Herbes, Saint-Théodorit cathedral and its Fenestrelle tower, pierced with windows all the way up, are among the town’s landmarks.

The Georges-Borias museum and the former Bishop’s Palace, close by, round off your discovery of the ducal town.

To extend your walk, the Eure valley, a few minutes from the centre, offers a shady setting of plane trees and poplars, with the Eure spring and remains of the Roman aqueduct.

At the beginning of our era, the Romans built an aqueduct about 50 km long between the Eure spring, in Uzès, and Nîmes. The Pont du Gard, a UNESCO-listed monument, is its most spectacular remain.

About 12 km from Uzès, it can be reached by car or by bike on the Uzès – Pont du Gard – Beaucaire greenway, laid out along a former railway line.

Itinerary: half a day or a full day in Uzès

Half a day in the ducal town. On Wednesday or Saturday morning, enjoy the market on the Place aux Herbes, then follow the lanes to the Duché and the Fenestrelle tower.

A full day. In the morning, explore Uzès on foot. In the afternoon, head to the Pont du Gard to admire the Roman aqueduct above the Gardon, before returning to the villa, about an hour away.
