A former fair town where Molière once stayed, Pézenas delights visitors with its preserved historic heart, its craft workshops and its love of theatre. Here are the places not to miss.
One of the first conservation areas created under the Malraux law, in 1965, the historic centre keeps all the charm of its late 16th-century houses, in a maze of cobbled lanes.
From 1560, the Montmorency family, governors of Languedoc, chose Pézenas as their residence, and until the mid-17th century the town hosted the sessions of the Estates of Languedoc.
Along the streets, ornate doorways, balconies and wrought ironwork bear witness to the town’s rich past.
To uncover their secrets, the tourist office offers guided tours and family activity booklets, such as “De porte en porte” or “Balcons et ferronneries”.
Under the protection of the Prince of Conti, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin became “Molière” with his troupe, the Illustre Théâtre, which made Languedoc its favourite base from 1647 to 1657.
From the barber Gély’s shop to the Bât d’Argent inn, follow in his footsteps, then visit the Vulliod-Saint-Germain museum to see Molière’s armchair. Every June, the “Molière dans tous ses éclats” festival celebrates his work.
The former Maison Consulaire, once the seat of municipal power, now houses the Maison des Métiers d’Art.
Step into the workshops: cabinetmakers, cutlers, weavers, ironworkers, enamellers and jewellery designers share their skills. Along the D613, the antiques and second-hand dealers’ route promises some great finds.
Set in the former chapel of the Black Penitents, the Pézenas theatre, listed as a historic monument in 1995, reopened after restoration in 2012.
It was here that Marcel Pagnol spoke his famous words: “If Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was born in Paris, Molière was born in Pézenas”. It hosts performances all year round.
Half a day in the historic centre. Wander the lanes with an activity booklet, step into the craft workshops and say hello to the Molière monument.
A full day. In the morning, a guided tour of the historic centre with the tourist office. In the afternoon, the Vulliod-Saint-Germain museum and the antiques route, not forgetting to taste the little Pézenas pies and berlingot sweets, before returning to the villa, about an hour away.
By car, allow about an hour from Lunel-Viel, via the motorway. The historic centre is then best explored on foot.
Without a car, access is more difficult: Pézenas has no railway station, so the car remains the simplest option.
The tourist information office is at 20 place du 14-Juillet. Town maps, a visitor guide and activity booklets are available there, and can also be downloaded from the tourist office website.
