Awarded the “Ville d’art et d’histoire” label and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Roman and Romanesque monuments, Arles is, after Rome, the city with the most Roman remains. It also inspired Vincent van Gogh: here are the places not to miss.

The amphitheatre

Among the 8 monuments of Arles listed as World Heritage, the Roman amphitheatre is the most spectacular. Its arcades dominate the historic centre and set the tone for the visit.

Good news for families: the city’s monuments are free for under-18s accompanied by a parent, and passes let you combine several visits, valid from 2 days to 6 months.

The Roman theatre

Next to the amphitheatre and from the same period, the Roman theatre still displays part of its tiers and its orchestra. It too is one of the monuments listed as World Heritage.

Nearby, the cryptoporticus of the Forum, impressive underground galleries, and the Baths of Constantine, on the banks of the Rhône, complete your discovery of Roman Arles.

Saint-Trophime and its cloister

Built in the 12th century and listed as World Heritage, the Saint-Trophime cloister is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture, with its finely carved capitals.

The carved portal of the Saint-Trophime primatial church, built in the 12th and 15th centuries, is worth the trip on its own.

The Alyscamps

The Alyscamps, a Christian necropolis listed as World Heritage, offer a shady walk lined with remarkable sarcophagi, all the way to the church of Saint-Honorat.

Van Gogh himself set up his easel here: the Alyscamps are among the places in Arles he immortalised in several paintings.

In the footsteps of Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh spent 16 months in Arles, between February 1888 and May 1889, and produced around 300 drawings and paintings there. A signposted trail marks some ten places where he set up his easel, such as the Place du Forum, which inspired “Café Terrace at Night”.

The Rhône embankment recalls “Starry Night Over the Rhône”, and Place Lamartine “The Yellow House”. To go further, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles puts his work in dialogue with contemporary creation.

Itinerary: half a day or a full day in Arles

Half a day in ancient Arles. Start with the amphitheatre and the Roman theatre, then make your way to the Saint-Trophime cloister, before a break on a terrace on the Place du Forum.

A full day. In the morning, follow the same walk. In the afternoon, stroll through the Alyscamps, then follow the Van Gogh trail to the banks of the Rhône, before heading back to the villa, 50 minutes away.
