The city of the popes, Avignon charms visitors with its UNESCO-listed heritage, its vibrant cultural life and its relaxed way of life. Here are the places not to miss.

The Palais des Papes

The largest Gothic monument in the world, the Palais des Papes is the symbol of Avignon: a visit that takes you back in time, in the heart of the city of the popes.

Don’t miss its papal gardens. In July, its main courtyard hosts the Festival d’Avignon, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, while the OFF festival fills the whole city.

The Pont d’Avignon

Made famous by the song, the Pont Saint-Bénezet no longer spans the whole Rhône: only four of its original twenty-two arches remain.

You can still “dance” on it and enjoy a superb view over the Rhône, the palace and the city. Ask about the combined ticket with the Palais des Papes.

The Rocher des Doms

The cradle of the city, the Rocher des Doms and its garden rise 30 metres above the Rhône, five minutes’ walk from the palace.

Right next door, the Notre-Dame des Doms basilica and its golden Virgin overlook the valley. From the terraces, the view stretches to the Île de la Barthelasse, the largest river island in Europe.

The ramparts

4.3 km long and UNESCO World Heritage listed, the walls still encircle the old town.

They give Avignon its timeless atmosphere: a walk or bike ride along the ramparts shows just how impressive they are.

Place de l’Horloge and Rue des Teinturiers

In the heart of the walled city, Place de l’Horloge brings together the town hall, the opera house, lively café terraces and a merry-go-round for children.

Nearby, Rue des Teinturiers, nicknamed “the street of wheels”, is the most picturesque in the city, and the Les Halles market delights food lovers with local produce.

Itinerary: half a day or a full day in Avignon

Half a day within the walls. Visit the Palais des Papes, climb up to the Rocher des Doms for the view over the Rhône, then head to the Pont Saint-Bénezet.

A full day. In the morning, the Palais des Papes and the Pont d’Avignon. After lunch at Les Halles or on Place de l’Horloge, stroll along Rue des Teinturiers and visit one of the city’s museums, whose permanent collections are free, before returning to the villa, about an hour away.

Getting to Avignon from Lunel-Viel

By car, allow about an hour from Lunel-Viel. The underground Palais des Papes car park, open 24/7, comes out right on the palace square; the Gare Centre car park is free for 3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, outside the summer season.

By train, TER regional trains link Lunel with Avignon via Nîmes. Avignon-Centre station is right outside the ramparts, a stone’s throw from the tourist office.

Practical information

The tourist office is at 41 cours Jean-Jaurès. It sells tickets for the main sites and the Avignon City Pass.
