The Roman bridge

Built in the 1st century on the orders of the Emperor Tiberius, the Roman bridge has 21 arches over nearly 200 metres. It allowed the Roman road linking Nîmes to Toulouse to cross the Vidourle.

Today, it is one of the rare inhabited bridges in Europe, like the Ponte Vecchio: a remarkable structure to admire from the riverbanks.

The fortified castle

Standing on the rocky spur since the 11th century, the castle overlooks the town. Louis IX took possession of it in the 13th century and turned it into a true fortress, with a chapel reworked over the Wars of Religion.

In the chapel, a fun exhibition takes you back in time to discover the history of the town and the castle. The castle is currently undergoing work, with a reopening announced soon.

The medieval town and the Saturday market

Part of Sommières is a protected heritage area. Information panels mark a historical trail through the medieval town, and treasure hunts await children and teenagers.

Since the 13th century, Sommières has been known for its markets and fairs: the Saturday morning market is now one of the finest in the Gard, among cobbled lanes, lively squares and local produce.

The banks of the Vidourle

The Vidourle offers wild, restful nature, ideal for a break by the water after visiting the town.

Sommières also won over the British writer Lawrence Durrell, author of “The Alexandria Quartet”, who settled here and lived in the town until his death in 1990: you can wander the lanes he knew.

A stop at the Roc de Massereau tree-top adventure park
