Visiting Sète

About 45 min by car from our accommodation, to combine with an oyster tasting in Loupian

Looking for accommodation near Sète for your holiday? In Lunel-Viel, 45 minutes from the “singular island”, our holiday homes with a pool sleep 4 to 12: ideal for discovering Sète and the Thau lagoon, then enjoying Montpellier, the Camargue and the beaches.

Nicknamed the “Venice of the Languedoc”, Sète owes its destiny to Louis XIV and to Pierre-Paul Riquet’s Canal du Midi. Between canals, fishing port, Mont Saint-Clair and fine sandy beaches, the birthplace of Georges Brassens and Paul Valéry has a character all of its own: here are the places not to miss.

The canals and the Canal Royal

The town centre is built around its canals, lined with lively quays: restaurant terraces, colourful fishing boats, swing bridges… Stroll along the Canal Royal, the backbone of the town, to feel the pulse of Sète.

In summer, the canals host the famous water jousting, a traditional sport celebrated at the Saint-Louis festival for more than two centuries. In the warmer months, a water bus also links different parts of the town.

Mont Saint-Clair

Overlooking the town, Mont Saint-Clair offers one of the finest panoramas on the French coast: the Mediterranean on one side, the Thau lagoon on the other, and the rooftops and canals of Sète at your feet.

Climbing it is a must on your first visit, whether to enjoy the view by day or to watch the sunset.

The Cimetière Marin and the Musée Paul Valéry

Celebrated by Paul Valéry, the Cimetière Marin (seaside cemetery) rises in tiers facing the Mediterranean, with a magnificent view over the port and the open sea.

Just above, the Musée Paul Valéry holds more than 7,200 works, from fine arts collections to modern and contemporary art. Its panoramic terrace is one of the finest viewpoints in the Archipel de Thau, with the town, the lagoon, Mont Saint-Clair and the sea as far as the eye can see.

The Môle Saint-Louis and the Musée de la Mer

From the fishing port, walk along the Môle Saint-Louis to its lighthouse and its 126 steps. Nearby, the Théâtre de la Mer occupies a former defensive fort, designed by Vauban after the British attacked the port in 1710.

Free of charge, the Musée de la Mer traces the history of the port since the 18th century and displays the only collection in France of fishing boat models by André Aversa, as well as two rooms devoted to water jousting.

La Pointe Courte and the Quartier Haut

Immortalised by Agnès Varda’s film, the fishermen’s district of La Pointe Courte charms visitors with its low houses with pastel façades reflected in the canal. It is one of the most photogenic spots in the Archipel de Thau.

In the lanes of the Quartier Haut, the walls are covered with monumental murals: free of charge, the Musée à Ciel Ouvert (MaCO, open-air museum) is explored map in hand, like a giant art gallery.

The beaches, from the Corniche to the Lido

Sète is also about the sea: from the Corniche promenade, a favourite at sunset, to the 12 kilometres of Lido beaches stretching towards Marseillan. These long stretches of fine sand are perfect for families.

Before the beach, stop by the covered market (Les Halles), open every morning from 7 am to 2 pm: oysters and mussels from the Thau lagoon, Sète tielles (octopus pies) and fish from the auction await you.

Escale à Sète, the festival of maritime traditions

Escale à Sète, festival of maritime traditions - holiday rental

Every two years, around Easter, Escale à Sète turns the port into a huge popular festival: a parade of tall ships, a naval battle, international villages, sea shanty concerts and activities for the whole family. In some fifteen years, it has become one of the largest gatherings of maritime traditions in the world.

The last edition took place from 31 March to 6 April 2026, and the 10th edition is announced from 11 April 2028: a great reason to plan a spring stay.

A stop at Atelier & Co in Loupian

Atelier & Co oyster restaurant, Thau lagoon - holiday rental

About twenty minutes from Sète, on the shores of the Thau lagoon, Atelier & Co offers tastings in a real shellfish farm: oysters, mussels and shellfish served where they are produced, with a view over the Thau basin.

An ideal gourmet break on the way back, to extend the day by the lagoon.

Itinerary: half a day or a full day in Sète

Half a day in the heart of Sète. Start at the covered market with a tielle, then stroll along the Canal Royal. Then climb Mont Saint-Clair for the panorama over the sea and the Thau lagoon.

A full day. In the morning, follow the same walk, then head down to the fishing port and along the Môle Saint-Louis to the lighthouse. In the afternoon, wander the lanes of the Quartier Haut to discover the MaCO murals, or visit the Musée Paul Valéry and the Cimetière Marin. End on the Corniche promenade at sunset, the locals’ favourite moment, before heading back to the villa, 45 minutes away.
