The ramparts

Built in the 13th century at the instigation of Saint Louis, the ramparts encircle the town for more than 1.6 kilometres and are among the best-preserved fortifications in Europe.

Walking along the parapet walk, you enjoy remarkable views over the medieval town, the wild expanses of the Camargue and the surrounding salt marshes.

The Tour de Constance

Overlooking the walls, the Tour de Constance has watched over the town for more than seven centuries. In turn a lookout post, a defensive bastion and a state prison, it is one of the iconic monuments of Aigues-Mortes.

From the top, an exceptional panorama opens over the lagoons and the ever-changing colours of the salt marshes. Guided tours of the tower are offered every day.

Place Saint-Louis

The beating heart of the town, Place Saint-Louis has at its centre the statue of Saint Louis, made by the sculptor James Pradier in 1849. Shady and lined with cafés and restaurants, it invites you to stop on a terrace.

Every Wednesday and Sunday morning, the market livens up the shady avenue Frédéric-Mistral. Don’t leave without tasting the fougasse of Aigues-Mortes, flavoured with orange blossom.

Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, the church of Notre-Dame-des-Sablons is the oldest religious building in Aigues-Mortes.

Its contemporary stained-glass windows, created by the artist Claude Viallat in antique blown glass, cast a colourful light that transforms the space. The chapels of the Grey Penitents and the White Penitents complete your discovery of the town’s religious heritage.

A few minutes from the centre, the Aigues-Mortes salt marshes cover 8,000 hectares. Every summer, the basins take on their famous pink hues, among flamingos and mountains of salt known as “camelles”.

On foot, by bike or aboard the little tourist train, discovering the salt marshes is a unique experience; in July and August, you can even follow a salt worker.

A stop at Espiguette beach

About twenty minutes away, in Le Grau-du-Roi, Espiguette beach unrolls 10 kilometres of fine sand and dunes 12 metres high, in a protected natural site.

An ideal swim to end the day after visiting the ramparts.
